Effect Of White Noise Machines On A Childs Learning And Behavior

August 2, 2008 – 2:32 am

It’s likely that the 1 in 3 adults who suffer from insomnia and sleep related troubles experienced similar problems as children. It’s widely understood that lack of sleep can impact a child’s ability to learn and grow, but little information exists about how to identify sleep troubles and ways to solve the problem.

Babies that lack proper sleep tend to be more irritable and have a more difficult time learning new tasks. Tired babies can easily succumb to fits of rage, often chalked up to a personality trait. School age children who lack proper rest tend to function below their innate ability level in school. They can even exhibit signs similar to that of a learning disability simply due to sleep deprivation. Before trying medicines or accepting the behavior, try testing the effects of a white noise machine…read more

Why You And Your Baby Need A White Noise Cd

August 2, 2008 – 2:13 am

Have you ever had your baby so fussy in the evenings that the only thing that would calm her down was to puther in the car and drive around? If you are chuckling right now thinking, ‘Been there, done that,’ there is an easier way. Playing a white noise cd to calm your cranky, colicky baby is a way more practical, and with the cost of gas, less expensive solution than driving around for hours.

The benefits of white noise are numerous. Adults enjoy the sound masking qualities of white noise to concentrate better at work, sleep longer and better, and also relax after stressful day.

You can obtain white noise cd’s that play everything from ocean waves to dishwashers running. It really is a matter of preference and what relaxes you.

However, when it comes to your baby, vacuum cleaner white noise or hair dryer white noise works very well. And here’s why.

When your baby was safe, warm and snug in mom’s tummy for nine months, she could hear the constant ‘whoosh’ of blood roaring around her. If you place your hands over your ears for a few seconds, you get a similar sound as baby did for nine months.

When baby is born, she is thrust into a strange environment full of lights and sounds that are startling and sometimes scary. Some babies have a difficult time adjusting to this new environment. Their nervous systems aren’t fully developed and as they become overloaded with all this new stimuli, they kind of become stressed out.

Babies handle stress innately by crying. Colicky babies cry a lot. Generally, the ‘rule of threes’ determines if you have a colicky baby. If your baby is otherwise healthy (other than the crying), the ‘rule of threes’applies if the crying:

Begins within the first three weeks of life
Lasts up to or more than three hours a day
Occurs at least three or more days a week
Continues for at least three weeks
Disappears at about three months of age

As funny as it sounds, a tool that is incredibly effective in calming a colicky baby fast is turning on your vacuum cleaner or hair dryer. The sound of a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer running is very similar to the sound frequency and tone (remember the ‘whoosh’ your baby heard while in the womb. When your baby hears this sound, she is immediately reminded of a place that was warm and happy. And she stops crying.

But you really don’t want to drag out your vacuum cleaner or hair dryer every time baby starts to cry. It will burn up the motors. Playing a white noise cd is much more practical. You can control the volume of the cd. Also, you can put it in a cd player, press repeat, and have a soothing, atmosphere for your baby to sleep and relax for hours.

 So, the next time your baby is having a colic meltdown, instead of heading out to the car to drive around for hours, put in a white noise cd and make both you and your baby very happy.

How White Noise Can Help Reduce Your Stress Levels…

July 19, 2008 – 11:51 pm

Because white noise contains most sound frequencies, it is commonly used to mask other sounds. If you are in a hotel and voices from the room next-door are leaking into your room, you might turn on a fan to drown out the voices. The fan produces a good approximation of white noise. How does this "white" sound work and why does it mask out other noise?

Here is one way to think about it. Let’s say two people are talking at the same time. Your brain can normally pick out one of the two voices and actually listen to it and understand it. If three people are talking simultaneously, your brain can probably still pick out one voice. However, if 1,000 people are talking simultaneously, there is no way that your brain can pick out one voice. It turns out that 1,000 people talking together sounds a lot like white noise.

So when you turn on a fan to create white noise, you are essentially creating a source of 1,000 voices. The voice next-door makes it 1,001 voices, and your brain can’t pick it out anymore. One thing to keep in mind when using white noise is that more is not always better - it is usually best to use just enough to help mask the offending noise, not completely overwhelm it.

There are three sources of white noise that are commonly used to help mask out annoying sounds: mechanically generated, electronically generated and recordings usually on CD format.

The mechanical devices produce a sound very close to that of a fan. The Sleepmate by Marpac is this type of device and has been around for a long time. This is the most popular type of white noise machine; probably because it produces a sound that we are all familiar with and don’t find unpleasant. One drawback of the mechanical units is that they are limited in volume. Since they produce the sound mechanically, it isn’t possible to simply turn up the volume.

White noise is commonly generated with a digital or electronic sound synthesizing device. Sound designers, with some processing and filtering, can create a multitude of effects such as wind, rain, waterfall or surf. The main consideration when choosing a digital device is if the device loops a recorded clip of sound or synthesizes its own sound. By looping we refer to a few seconds of sound that is digitally recorded and played over and over. They try to match up the end with the beginning but if you listen carefully you can detect where the segment begins - this is irritating to some people. The better digital sound devices actually synthesize the sound instead of playing a recording, therefore no looping.

Compact discs are a popular and inexpensive way (not counting the cost of a stereo system) to bring white noise into your home or office. You can get almost any sound imaginable but the most commonly used are nature sounds like rain, thunder or babbling brooks and nature sounds overlaid with soft music. The advantages of CDs are a high quality sound and low cost. The disadvantage is that, if you are using the sound to help you sleep, the interruption when changing tracks or cycling will often times wake you up. Generally the best uses for CDs are for office privacy, meditation or just relaxing.

White Noise By Don deLillo

July 17, 2008 – 2:28 am

White Noise is the eighth novel by Don DeLillo, and is widely considered his “breakout” work. The book won the National Book Award in 1985 and brought him to the attention of a much larger audience.

White Noise follows a year in the life of Jack Gladney, a professor who has made his name by pioneering the field of Hitler Studies (though he doesn’t speak German). He has been married five times to four women and has a brood of children and stepchildren with his current wife, Babette. In its first half called “Waves and Radiation”, White Noise is a chronicle of absurdist family life combined with academic satire.

In the second half, a chemical spill from a rail car releases an “airborne toxic event” over Jack’s home region, prompting an evacuation. Frightened by his exposure to the toxin, Gladney is forced to confront his mortality. Ironically, Gladney also realizes that his wife has been cheating on him in order to gain access to a drug called Dylar, an experimental new treatment for the fear of death.

Soon the novel becomes a meditation on modern society’s fear of death and its obsession with chemical cures as Gladney seeks to obtain his own black market supply of Dylar.

The drug is produced through an experimental, highly secretive process and comes in the form of a small white pill. During digestion water enters through a tiny laser drilled hole in the polymer coating and the active ingredients begin to dissolve, but can only leave through the hole, creating a highly controlled release of the chemical. When empty, the coating collapses in on itself and passes harmlessly out through the digestive tract. Dylar does not work properly, though, and extended use sometimes results in insanity. Extended users interpret spoken words and metaphor as actual actions and events.

The title “white noise” is a metaphor pointing to the confluence of all the symptomatic themes of modern culture that in their coming-together make it very difficult for an individual to actualize his or her ideas and personality and a play on the idea that many of these symptoms are created by and for the disproportionally “loud” demographic of “white” middle class consumers.

White noise is produced by combining sounds of all different frequencies together. If you took all of the imaginable tones that a human can hear and combined them together, you would have white noise.

Because white noise contains all frequencies, it is frequently used to mask other sounds.It can also be used to:

* Aid Sleep
* Enhance Privacy
* Block Distractions
* Mask Tinnitus
* Configure Audio Equipment
* Soothe Migraines
* and more…

How White Noise Can Help You Reax And Sleep Better…

July 13, 2008 – 12:16 am

You understand white light don’t you? White light is composed of all the wavelengths and frequencies of light in the visible spectrum. It comes out white. White paint reflects all the light that falls on it and absorbs none, so appears white. Black objects absorb all the light and reflects none. No light reflects back to your eyes, so the object appears black.

White noise is the sound analogue of white light. It is composed of all the sound wavelengths and frequencies in the sound spectrum. It sounds like a hum and is very soothing. It can be described as a flat noise spectrum. Any other sound generated simply joins it without changing its effect on the human ear, in the same way as some extra red light added to the white light spectrum would not change the white appearance to the human eye.

Complete white noise has a harsh sound to the ears, but that produced by white noise machines is gentler, more like the background hiss that radio astronomers pick up from outer space, which is believed to be the noise left after the big bang. The combination of frequencies is soothing and can help those who are distracted by individual sounds.

Barking dogs, for example, are neutralized since the noise they make simply adds itself to all the other frequencies that make up white noise. It is not recognized since it is not unique within the general spectrum of sound. It sounds a bit like sci-fi but it works and has a sound scientific basis that proves the theory.

White noise sound machines are often used by people who have tinnitus. This is an irritating ringing in the ears which has no known treatment. It can be a symptom of Mnires Disease which is a disorder of the labyrinth in the ear that causes vertigo, and white noise is used to mask the ringing to an acceptable sound level and allow relaxation and sleep.

White noise is so soothing to the human ear that it is widely used to help induce sleep in children suffering from colic. This condition is very upsetting to parents, though it does not appear to bother the children apart from the crying. Sound machines are recommended by doctors to help babies sleep. They are useful in helping the parents get some sleep since they mask out the crying sound. With babies they appear to hide the environmental stimuli thought to be the cause of colic in most children.

High quality White noise machines come in several forms, including the Marpac SleepMate 980, Obus Forme Sound Machine, Conair Sound Conditioners and the Sound Oasis. They provide a gentle hum or waterfall sound that is very soothing, but can remove even noises and barking dogs. They are often used to help people sleep better by masking outside audible environmental stimuli.

Sometimes white sound can be used, not only to mask the sound of barking dogs, but also to soothe them. The constant white sound appears to quieten such dogs and help other animals that have specific disorders caused by fear or separation, and has just as much sleep-inducing properties with animals as with humans.

Human beings need sleep, and without enough of it their efficiency and alertness are reduced. This can have devastating results psychologically and physically, and can cause accidents and death. Sleep deprivation has been the cause of many deaths on the highways and white sound machines can cure this problem. These machines are becoming more popular because of its effect in removing extraneous noises like continual chatter, loud music and barking dogs.

However, if you are a parent, you will find its most appealing application is in allowing a good night’s sleep when you have a child that is finding it difficult to fall asleep. Not only will a white noise machine soothe your child to sleep, bit it will also help you to get some much needed sleep. The strangest thing about white noise is that it is unknown to so many people.
